A native mobile app is a smartphone application that is coded in a specific programming language, such as Objective C for iOS and Java for Android operating systems. Native mobile apps provide fast performance and a high degree of reliability. They also have access to a phone’s various devices, such as its camera and address book. In addition, users can use some apps without an Internet connection. However, this type of app is expensive to develop because it is tied to one type of operating system, forcing the company that creates the app to make duplicate versions that work on other platforms.
Most video games are native mobile apps, native apps are what most default mobile apps are categorized under. They offer the best of experiences when it comes to features handling, compatibility with your devices and best user interface.
Microsoft has been releasing its own apps on Android lately, but it’s apparently looking to buy one now. Financial Times reports Microsoft is swooping in to snap up keyboard maker SwiftKey for $250 million. SwiftKey is running on millions of Android devices, plus the ones from OEMs that license and re-skin SwiftKey. Now Microsoft could extend its reach to all those devices very soon.
As neither company is talking (we’ve reached out to SwiftKey), it’s impossible to know what Microsoft has planned. The AI technology in SwiftKey’s predictive engine is certainly interesting, as evidenced by the impressive performance of the alpha app it released a few months ago. It seems likely Microsoft will keep offering the app on Android with such a huge user base. And hey, maybe they can just cram Cortana in there too?
SwiftKey has been one of the top keyboard apps on Android for years, even when it was a paid app. Finding the premium app model didn’t suit it, SwiftKey moved to freemium in 2014. SK has never talked about how successful it has been at selling themes, but they won’t have to worry about that anymore with big daddy Microsoft paying the bills. The deal will be made official later this week according to Financial Times.
It’s a just tiny little change. Google has snuck a single thumbs up button into the Google Play review section and packed the spam button into a side menu. This replaces an old, Reddit-like system that allowed for both thumbs up and thumbs down.
Now that they’re using a setup much closer to Facebook’s, this Like-like thumb icon lets Google Play users nod in agreement with reviews that say what they would have said about an app. To maintain simplicity of design, and perhaps to discourage its frivolous use, Google has relegated the spam flag to a small menu beside the thumb. This makes it a two step process to flag something as spam, but giving positive feedback is just one touch away.
This is part of an ongoing process of tweaking that the Google Play dev team has been working with lately. For instance, they recently released the ability for game and app devs to addpromo codes, which gave devs the option to run promotions that let users download their items for free. Previously, the primary place to get free apps was with the third-party storeAmazon Underground.

According to Google’s director of consumer hardware Andrew Bowers, the company is working on a myriad of new features and improvements for next year’s Android 7.0 upgrade (called N for short).
“We’re working on lots of things right now for N that, of course, we wish we had, you know, yesterday,” Bowers wrote. “But we’d spoil the surprise of N if we shared all of them. Split screen is in the works!”
The update is expected to be made available in October or November 2016, based on Android’s update launch history.
The addition of the split screen feature would bring Google’s tablets up to speed with those from Windows and Apple, which got screen sharing technology with Windows 8 in 2012 and with iOS 9 in September, respectively.
While Apple currently allows up to two apps to share the screen with its Split View, Microsoft’s Windows 10 update brought users the ability to view up to four apps simultaneously.
As developers, they will be able to create iOS and OS X apps on non apple systems and will guarantee of 100% compatibility.
Not only this, even they will be able to develop android apps, windows apps, or client-side web apps using swift, which is barely a year and half old.
They will have full capacity to contribute improvements to the design and implementation of swift. But what about us who are not programmers? There will be flood of new developers who always wanted to create iOS and OS X apps but they couldn’t due to lack of proper resources.
So you can expect a lots of awesome fast apps to come out over the next few years. No headache, no crash, no frozen apps. The future of swift will be exciting and we cannot wait to be part of it.
In this tutorial we will go through about how to show a list with different view and number of view in each row using the RecycleView that is an improved ListView created by google.
Our objective is to achieve the following view:
As you can see above in the screen shot in the first row we have only one view, in the second we have two then in the third we have one … etc.
So in each row we have different number of view and it is not just a different number of view but also it has different view for example the height of the two views in the second is less than the view in first row also the text size and the padding.
Before we start writing our code we need to add the RecycleView and the CardView libraries in the dependencies in the build.gradle file because we are using these in our project.
We have finished creating our view now we will create a model for each item in the list.
As the screen shot shows we only have two data the title and the image and because this only a tutorial we will get our image from the draw able folder so we only need the id number of the image.
Next we will create our view holder class the purpose of this class is to get the view only once then hold it and use it when needed as the user scroll up and down and that will help to increase the performance when scrolling.
In this class we have a contracture that get a list of CardData model to set these data to the views and also we get the context to be able to show a toast message when we click on the image.
In the getItemCount method we returned the size of the CardData list and that says to the adapter that we want to display number of view items in the list that is equal to our list of CardData.
Now for our purpose we want to display different view depend on the data position so the first data will be displayed in row_card.xml then the next two data will be displayed in row_card_2.xml then again we will display the data after the two in row_card.xml and so on.
In this case we can override getItemViewType to tell the adapter what type of view we want to display depend on the position by returning a specific number.
So we check if the position is divided by three or not if it is true we will return 0 and 0 in our case mean that we want to row_card.xml otherwise we will return 1 and that will mean we want display row_card_2.xml.
In onCreateViewHolder method we will create the view for each item. In this method we have two parameter the parent where the new view will be added into it after it is bound to adapter position and the viewType and that is number that we have returned in getItemViewType method.
In this method we need to return a new view holder (in our case new CardViewHolder) with the view we want to display as a parameter.
So we will check if the viewType is equal to 0 then we will inflate row_card.xml otherwise it will be 1 then we will inflate row_card_2.xml
The last method we will discuss is the onBindViewHolder here in this method we will get in our hand on the view holder and its position.
In this method we can modify the view and edit it but all what we want is to set the data by getting a CardData from cardDataList depend on the position and then set the data to the view. We also have set an onClickListener to the image to show a message with the title when user click on the image.
The last thing to do will be in our Main Activity class were we will create the data model and set it to our adapter then set it in the RecycleView.
First of all we get our RecyclerView from the xml and initiate setHasFixedSize to true to increase performance because our RecyclerView size will not be changed.
Then we created a GridLayoutManager to our RecyclerView.
We did not Create LinearLayoutManager because if we do so then every row will only hold one item view so we will not have two image in single row as in the screen shot so we will use GridLayoutManager instead with 2 column and make it in vertical.
But now each row will hold 2 view by default so if we stop there everything will be missed up and we won’t have a one view in one row so we need to tell the GridLayoutManager when we want the item to take the whole row (2 column) and when we want it to take the half row (1 column).
So we setSpanSizeLookUp to our GridLayoutManager and override getSpanSize method in this method it will give us the position of the item and will return the size number of the item.
In our case the number of column in GridLayoutManager is 2 and that will be our max size we can return in getSpanSize method so what we want now is to return 2 when we want the item view to take the two column (whole row) and return 1 when we want the view to take one column (half row) so we will use the same condition we used in the adapter that is if the number is divided by 3 then it will take the whole view because we will view row_card.xml in this case otherwise it will only take half of the view.
Finally we set the layout manager to our RecyclerView, create an adapter with CardData list and set the adapter to our RecyclerView to show our list in the app.
Manama: Bahrain-based insurer LIC (International), a subsidiary of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India, has seen 18 per cent growth year-to-date in terms of policies issued, the company’s top official has said.
LIC (International) managing director and chief executive Rajesh Kandwal told the GDN that the full-year premium target has been achieved much in advance.
“While the targets in single premium and total first premium were achieved in June itself, the target in non-single premium was achieved last month,” he said.
Mr Kandwal said this after the 92nd meeting of the company’s board at the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain yesterday.
Total assets of the company increased to $1.467 billion during the last six months and the company is confident of achieving its goal of becoming a $2bn enterprise by 2020, he said.
The company’s investment income as on September 30 was $41 million and profit earned was $3.3m.
According to Mr Kandwal, a number of bancassurance agreements have been signed with banks like ADCB, RAK Bank, Mashreq Bank in Dubai and Qatar, which has contributed substantially to new premium.
“Underwriting guidelines have been revised and liberalised to a great extent making it easy for new customers to take policies without much hassle,” he added.
Besides Mr Kandwal, directors who attended the meeting included LIC of India chairman S K Roy, LIC of India managing director V K Sharma and Intercol director Abdulrahman Ali Alwazzan.
Intercol is the chief agent of the company.
Mr Alwazzan also signed a new product marketing agreement with Fakhro Insurance Services executive director Abdulla Esam Fakhro on the sidelines of the meeting.
